The Wodwose is a woodland spirit that has an association with the Green Man, the divine aspect of nature. Merlin seems to have been a shaman before he was a wizard and at one time he was referred to as the "Wild Man of the Woods" which is another name given to the Wodwose. Wodwose combines passion with a close connection to the natural world and suggests growth, development, unpredictability and manifestation of spirit in the world of matter.
In keeping with their Earth primary, Wodwose are hard working, cautious, materialistic, shrewd and ambitious. Wodwose are builders and maintainers, but also fiercely protective of things they care about. They excel in understanding complex technical problems and work tenaciously to overcome them. They are extremely well-organized and have high standards of excellence that they impose upon themselves more than on others. They like to try things out in practice and to act rather than waste time thinking about things. Due to the creative quality of Fire in combination with the sensitive quality of Earth, Wodwose may be particularly attracted to artistic forms of expression such as painting and sculpture. Their strong moral and outward-looking aspect involving conservation and guardianship of the land means there is an urge to develop social standing by working in some way for the community. They will attempt to inspire others through social activities involving art and spiritual initiatives and are happy to work with others as long as there is a specific and practical goal in sight.
