How to Shrink...

How does one shrink a head? Or more importantly at least to me... is why shrink a head at all???

In my defense it isn't because I am looking to curse anyone or even because it might be fun to watch AI (artificial intelligence) do it. I have a much more practical reason for doing so. And yes, it involves my moon babies.

When I am challenging myself in a new area of creation, I tend to get caught up in the process.

I am not necessarily looking at the end result when I am in the middle of having a conversation with my muse (the clay). It doesn't matter really who is actually going to come out the winner... me or the clay? It's really all about the conversation.

Babies aren't my first choice of dolls to sculpt. They are so soft and round. It is hard to see their perspectives and to get the depths to their faces and probably is why I enjoy sculpting older people for my characters.

But when my muse is inspiring me to see things and think ideas I haven't had before, it is hard to resist. Of course tempting me with the Moonbabies's story had me curious to begin with.

So, now my muse has me hooked! Now I need to create the Moonbabies to bring them into my realm, my world. Their ears were particularly fun to play with, BUT...

Without having to start totally from scratch, the Moonbabies came out bigger than I wanted them to be. My hubby keeps telling me I seem to have a size I like to work in. Who am I to argue with him (*lol*). That being the case, then how do I make the babies smaller in size without tossing the baby out with the bathwater (Old mundane Outie saying *smiling*)?

Back to a little math. First the head shrinks 10% from the size of the clay head to just going into porcelain greenware. This is hardly noticeable when working with the greenware. I need to make a bigger change than that.

When greenware fires to porcelain it looses 20% of it's size. So now I am up to a 30% reduction. Not bad I think.

It means I have to clean the greenware head, fire it in the kiln to bisque, and then make another mold off of the fired porcelain - just to shrink it's side! But the artist in me demands this size and the practical side of me agrees. I would rather do this instead of having to sculpt a new head and try to make it smaller.

Of course, when I finally get the doll the size I want, it means that I have to smash two casting molds instead of one since this doll will be a OOAK (One-Of-A-Kind) doll.

Now, if I could think of a way that wouldn't be too painful to shrink my hips, I really would be a magician *lol*.

It was as House Mother Meerher and E'luminosity (Ellie) were walking the halls of the Luminary Council on their way to their next class of magical wand making when Ellie asked, "Meerher, have you noticed any changes in the realms since we have received our new Monacle Dragon?"

"You mean since the young Dragon, Dree accepted his new responsibilities to the realm and is now enhancing the magical energy to the many realms we watch over and protect?" the House Mother answered.

"Yes, " Ellie replied. "There seems a shift of new energy coming in which is understandable since he is a young Dragon (in Dragon' years). But it isn't just that," she continued.

"Oh, do you mean all the new fairy tales that have been manifesting in the many realms," Meerher replied. "Yes," Ellie answered. "I may be only a young Moonie, but I have never seen or even heard about this many new stories and tales coming to pass before."

"That my dear, is because we have had more new Moon babies being born now with the new Monacle guarding the Ancient Tree," Meerher sagely said.

Ellie stopped and stared at Meerher. "What does that have to do with anything?"

The wise Meerher nodded her head and replied, "When a moon baby is born..."
