The History of the
Nyte Shades or (the Nyte Shades' Family Roots)
For a long time, Hunter, the Shadows’ King, just stood and stared at the waterfalls in the garden. If a Borrower had the "Dragon tablet", then the secret would soon be out. It was time for Ffion to know her history before she heard it from others who didn’t know the "whole story".
"Ffion, daughter, come sit here,” said the king as he beckoned for her to sit upon a stone bench in one of the contemplation spots in the garden. “I feel it is time I reveal to you what we are and why it has been kept hidden for such a very long time.” Ffion quickly sat down where he gestured, wondering why her father was acting so serious. "What could he be talking about?" she wondered as she stared at him, waiting for him to speak.

After taking a deep breath, Hunter began to explain. "I have never told you that we are of the oldest race here in the Realm. Our race began when Mother Earth and her Sister, the Moon, decided to create a special place to allow magic to be seeded and to grow. Together they started the Moon Garden.
Mother Earth began by planting the first moonflower blossoms which the Moon then showered down the magical glow of the full moon's light on them. The two sisters knew that eventually others would want to destroy their beautiful garden to possess the power of the moonflowers. So, they created the powerful nyteshade flowers to grew alongside the moon flowers. But the Moon thought that this wasn't enough, that there should also be guardians. She then took some of the nyteshade flowers and gave them wings with a touch of her magic.
Our ancestors breathed in the Moon's magic and with the essence of the nyteshade flower become those caretakers and thrived with their connection to the garden. We became the Nyte Shades.” |
Ffion did not know what to say. She had never heard this story before and was even surprised to find that she was a ‘Nyte Shade’ whatever that was. Before she could ask her question, Hunter continued speaking.
“We were created to watch over this realm in which our garden grew and to keep it safe. We did it well for several centuries, but then one tragic day one of us gave her magic to a dragon.” Again, Ffion was shocked. “A Nyte Shade would give her magic to a Dragon? Why would a Dragon need a Nyte Shade’s magic?” flashed through Ffion's thoughts, but again, before she could speak, her father continued. “What one did affected us all and through this Nyte Shade’s sacrifice, we all became connected to all the dragons in the Realm as the magic spread through them.” (to read this story – click here)…
This time as the Shadows’ King paused, his daughter quickly asked the question that was bothering her the most. “Father, why are you telling me this now?” After staring at the waterfalls, again what seemed like an eternity to Ffion, he looked her in the eyes and told her. “A dark secret was contained in a tablet that I was entrusted with and looks like it will soon be known which may change our realm forever. I have dreaded this moment from the day I received this crown and was told of my duties from he who ruled before me.”
Realizing that this was more serious than she first thought, Ffion stood up and ran to her father, wrapping her arms around him as she held on to him. Slowly he lowered his hand and began stroking her hair. “There is more that you must know before the secret is revealed to all,” he murmured to her. As she lifted her head to look at his face, he continued, “ Because of our connection to the Dragons is why the current Shadows’ King is to always helps a new wish dragon come into its power. It is also why we kept the moon garden secret, for it is the place where the White Dragon shed her last tear before she left.” (to read this story – click here)…
“It is time you also learned of the Sleeping Sisters as well. It is because of them that we now share the responsibility of the garden after the flight of the Nyte Shades. This is where the Sleeping Sisters guard the Blue Bloom.” “But father, how come I have never heard of Nyte Shades and what do you mean their flight? I just thought we were like all of the rest of the fae in the realm. Are there others like us?” asked Ffion.

“When the Dragons left so did many of our kind, leaving just a few to watch over the garden,” answered the King. “They felt so close to the Dragons by this time, they decided to follow them wherever they went. Over time it has now become only you and I as the few remaining Ntye Shades in this Realm and we had only one mission. Actually, I had only one mission, to keep the Dragon Tablet safe and help any Wish Dragon to learn its powers before it could destroy itself. I have failed and now it seems that the stranger you saw in the garden has run off with the tablet I was to guard. I should have let the Sleeping Sisters guard it instead of me,” he sighed with guilt.
Ffion had never seen her father like this. Normally he was the one who always saw the bright side of things. “Father, all hope is not lost. Dulbbe will find the one who took the tablet. He can find anything with his special glasses and then we can hide the tablet again. Somewhere safe that no one will be able to find it.”
Hunter smiled at his daughter. A small part of him wanted to think she was right, but for once his optimism was not being felt. He knew that with the tablet being taken, it was just the beginning. Now with Hungry, a Wish Dragon, actually being born after such a long time and the tablet missing, there were sacrifices that will have to be made. Power that was going to be opening doorways that have been sealed for eons.
