Why did I choose porcelain as my medium of choice to work in? Especially since it requires a mold for me to create after sculpting the doll? Porcelain has a translucency to it that gives the piece an inner glow. I guess for me, porcelain comes to life in my hands. Though I did not know how to appreciate this about porcelain until my mother mentioned wanting to start up her doll collection again. |
My mother didn't have porcelain dolls as a child but instead had composition ones (I'll explain composition later and why we picked porcelain).
So, with the fussing of trying to sculpt in a style that I can get the piece out of a mold without catching, and then making sure it doesn't crack in the kiln-firing process, and then having to paint it and re-fire again in the kiln for the paint to adhere - why use it? |
Porcelain is a natural clay so I could say I am getting grounded in my earth energy as I work through a character. I love the magic of porcelain as it shrinks smaller and smaller - going from the sculpting to the finished piece. There is a timelessness to porcelain that has been handed down through history from the Ming Dynasty to the porcelain pieces of my characters that connects me to the Ages.
