Since it seemed no one was taking care of the grounds around the Mansion, a seedling dandelion was easier to find than it should have been. "I might have to listen to Mom and actually hire more help around here," thought the Baron as he looked at the dandelions in his gardens. Quickly picking one he returned to the parlor. "I have it! Now off to the caves," he said as the Dowager rose from the chair and started to the door leading to the caves under the Mansion.
"Is it too hopeful that a Wish Dragon has returned?" she mused. Upon entering the cave, they see the young Dragon sitting on a rock watching them. “Hello little one. My son says your name is Hungry and that you are a ‘Secret’. But, you may be more than that. We shall determine that soon. I am the Dowager Griselda, the Baron’s mother and am very happy to meet you. May I ask you some questions?”
“Will it hurt?” asked the Dragon. “If it does, then I don’t want to do it.”

At this point, the Baron thinks it might be a good idea to discover just what is going on beneath his mansion. Of course that includes dragging along Fiddlefaddle, his faithful but sometimes grumpy manservant, whether he wants to or not.
Did you see the hidden message? --- Dragon below mansion in cave
About this time, the Baron started to appear around a bend in the trail and was heading right for them. "Get down, now Hungry, don't let him see you," reminded Meen. Sitting there for someone to just wander by wasn't that exciting, thought Hungry. Besides, he was starting to get hungry. As the Baron was now closer to the log, Meen decided it was time to leap out. Meen jumps from the log and lands in front of the Baron, startled he jumps back and raises his cane in defense. "What are you? Or more like, who are you?" asks the Baron. "You wouldn't be trying to get me lost now would you?" "Are you asking for directions?" smiles Meen. Whispering to Hungry, "Let's hope so, that way we can send him around in circles. Otherwise this won't be as much fun".
Soon she was at the front of the caves and the voice was pretty insistent that she come inside, so she peered inside the dark and shadowy entrance, not sure what she was going to see. Suddenly she was staring into two bright eyes!
"What do you mean, what am I? I am Hungry!" replied the little Dragon. "No, not how do you feel, but what are you?" Exasperated, the little Dragon said again, "I am NOT Hungry! That is my name. As far as what I am... I don't know other than a Secret. My mother, Granny Flare, keeps telling me to be quiet cause I'm a Secret, but I want to play and the Frog Pond sounds like fun." By this time, Meen was exhausted trying to figure out her new friend and also wanted to go play. "Yes!" said Meen, "Let's go to the Frog Pond. Did you know that a group of baby tadpoles are called 'a knotty'?. Sounds silly to me cause how could anyone be naughty when you are so little and haven't even had time to get into trouble." That was enough of a deep thought for the two of them; so off they went to the Frog Pond to go play with the tadpoles.
“Yet to be named,” Granny heard in her mind.
Before Acorn could respond, Granny turned to Dragonia and continued, “So, this is the big thing you wanted me to see. I felt the power building when I was using the tunnel to the Baron’s mansion but never expected it to be this. What will you do now Baroness?”
“What did I tell you?” Granny Flare glared at the baby. “Hungry” replied the dragon out loud this time. Acorn jumped back a little startled. It was one thing to hear a voice in one’s head, but quite a different thing to see a dragon speak. “Acorn, you go and find some coal oil or kerosene and the biggest bottle you can find. Baroness, we will need something tough, like leather for the baby to suck on,” commanded Granny Flare. Acorn started to argue but the look that Granny gave him helped him to change his mind and off he went. “Remember, no one must know about the baby yet!” he heard her yell as he was leaving.
Looking at the Baroness, Granny Flare, being the house brownie that she is, continued “Now, what are we going to do about cleaning up this mess?” “More importantly, what are we going to do so that the Village Council doesn’t find out about the baby?” replied Dragonia. “How would I know?” snapped the Baroness. “It’s not like I have done this before.”
Soon the shock began to wear off and Acorn had his old snarky self back. “So, what is it’s name?” he asked Dragonia. This time the hatchling did not respond but only looked at the two.
“I think he wants us to name him,” she replied. The dragon nodded his head affirmatively. “What will it’s name be?” she thought.
"They always want to talk about worms, algae, and school. Never seen anybody who loves school as much as the fish do,” thought Acorn. As he entered the caves, he was still thinking about the fish and how he didn’t really want to visit with them if he did not find anything here. Thus distracted, he did not notice the movement from inside of the cave, but a sound did reach his ears. It was a scrapping type of noise, like claws scratching on stone. As he approached the spot where he thought he heard the noise someone stepped out of the darkness behind him and cleared their throat. “Ahem… and what can I do for you?” Acorn, quickly recovering from discovering that someone was able to sneak up on him (that was his special skill he thought) flew up into the air several feet and turned to see who spoke. “And you are?” he asked. “I am the Baroness Dragonia, and you are…?” she said, placing a pause at the end of her question as if she was waiting for him to finish it. Regaining his impish demeanor, Acorn replied, “a Fae with questions”. There, that should confuse her. “And, why would a baroness be in a dark cave on such a beautiful day? What is here that would take you away from your mansion?”
Walking deeper into the cave, they finally came to a small opening leading into another chamber. A light inside would brighten and then dim, brighten and dim, a steady repetition. Dragonia stopped outside of the opening and looked at Acorn one more time before stepping inside of the smaller cave. “Acorn, I need your help as this is more than I can handle on my own. I discovered it by accident and now it seems to be coming alive.” As Acorn entered the opening he could see deeper into the chamber and saw nestled in a pile of stones a Dragon’s egg! And it was hatching!
Acorn had nothing to say. His tongue was frozen in place and his heart nearly stopped. “It is a… a… dragon ‘s egg” he finally was able to stammer. The ‘itch’ was burning furiously between his wings – he had found the reason and was now not sure if he had made a mistake in finding it. |
